The Impact of the EU Exit: Accelerating Digital Transformation in the UK’s Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is the UK government department responsible for environmental protection, food production and standards, agriculture, fisheries and rural communities in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. As the most affected UK Government department by exiting Europe, Defra has been on an innovative journey that has driven the team to:

  • Redefine, improve and build operational and business processes.
  • Train and upskill existing staff and hire, onboard many new staff.
  • Rapidly build new technology platforms as well as integrate with and retire legacy platforms.
  • Work closely with industry, other countries, and other government departments.

Learn how Defra, alongside industry partner Kainos, built and accelerated their digital transformation journey to protect the UK industry from biosecurity risks by enacting regulation using data and expertise to enable seamless flow of trade.

Join this engaging conversation with Angela Murphy (Defra), Neil Gabriel (Kainos), and Jean Scott (Microsoft) as they revisit Defra’s cloud transformation journey during this period of transition, share challenges & best practices, discuss lessons learned to help other governments, and look ahead to what’s next on their digital journey.
