Narratives are at the core of democracies, influencing public discourse and perceptions, making it critical for all members of society and essential for those interested in advancing public policy to develop strong digital and media literacy skills.
The Narrative Spotter training is designed to equip participants with the tools and insights to navigate and contextualize media content critically. Building on the methodology developed by the Civic Media Observatory, it helps untangle complex and chaotic information environments. The training promotes more effective communication by deepening understanding of how narratives and counter-narratives emerge and spread, especially in contexts rife with misinformation and disinformation.
The 90-minute workshop equips participants with tools to track narrative shifts in media discourse, helping them identify emerging trends and evolving public discourse. The session focuses on two key aspects of media literacy:
Media Ecosystem Mapping - laying out the media landscape, identifying key media sources, themes, and entities of interest.
Narrative Spotting - delving into the narratives emerging from the mapped media sources, enabling participants to identify biases, challenge assumptions, and fill knowledge gaps.
